Thought of the Day

The notion of hierarchy present in our everyday lives was given to us by Cosmic Intelligence, which set up a hierarchy not only in the universe, but also in our earthly bodies. Human beings have a skeletal structure that corresponds to the mineral world and provides the body’s material support. Muscles are attached to our bones just as vegetation clings to the earth. Our circulatory system, with its blood vessels and capillaries, corresponds to rivers, streams and lakes, for water is the blood of the earth, which nourishes all vegetation. Our respiratory system corresponds to air, and finally, our nervous system corresponds to the sun on which everything depends. In fact it is not the bones which are the controlling factor, but the nervous system, which is the most finely developed, the...

Word of the Day

Many people accept an anarchic philosophy without seeing the dangers on the path they have chosen. Sooner or later they will be destroyed. If they studied the laws of nature, the creation of the universe, the regions composing it and the creatures inhabiting them, they would realize that they themselves are part of the body of living nature, and that they must act in harmony with the whole. If by their anarchic attitude they continue to cause problems, nature simply purges itself and gets rid of them. Anarchists are never tolerated for long and if humans do not get rid of them, nature will, because nature does not tolerate disharmony. To nature, it is like a tumour, or cancer in her body, and she cures it by eliminating these undesirable elements. Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov

Thought of the Day

In nature, the heart is represented by the oceans. Nature offers her heart to the sun saying, ‘My Lord, I give you my heart, my blood. Use it so that plants, animals and humans may live in plenty.’ The sun takes some of this blood and, raising it on high, endows it with spiritual qualities before sending it back to earth, where it benefits all beings and brings them joy. In opening their heart to the Creator and saying, ‘I give my heart to you’, Initiates reproduce within themselves this gift of the ocean to the sun. This ardent prayer, this sacrifice within the heart of humans is similar to that occurring in nature. Thanks to this spiritual transformation of their love and their blood, humans encounter the sun – God himself – and this meeting enriches and impregnates their...

Word of the Day

You do not especially enjoy hearing someone talk about self-mastery when everyone around you is clamouring for sexual freedom and justifying these demands with seemingly valid arguments. It is understandable that you do not want to be deprived of your pleasures, but at least try to see what advantages you might gain by renouncing some of them. It isn’t a question of depriving yourself to the extent that you have nothing left and find yourself in a void; it is a matter of understanding that it is better to replace certain crude, material pleasures with others that are subtler and more spiritual. When doctors see that patients are ruining their health by consuming too much deli meat, sweets or alcohol, they do not advise them to stop eating. They know very well that the patients would not...

Quote of the Day

A disciple’s ideal must be to come ever closer to the Word of God. The first rule for achieving this is to decide to stop slandering or speaking ill of anyone, and to control one’s tongue, saying to oneself, ‘If I do not watch what I say, I will never possess the true power of the Word, so I must be careful.’ Think of everything that is said in the course of a day! People casually roll out words, believing that if they are mistaken or have gone too far, it will only take a few words to make amends. No, they do not know what path a word takes, what regions it travels through, or what damage it does along the way. And even if one tries to repair the damage, it is extremely difficult, because in the meantime, other layers have been deposited, and it is hard to pass through them to...

Thought of the Day

You cannot force people to change. If they do not feel the need to do so, if they have not understood the importance of a spiritual philosophy and discipline, you cannot force them; you must let them go their own way. Their attitude simply shows that they are still very young and need more experience and lessons. They will suffer, of course, but it is this suffering that will eventually oblige them to change their lives. As for those who are dissatisfied with their prosaic, lacklustre and limited lives, an entire field of extraordinary activities opens before them. These activities are presented symbolically in what mythology refers to as ‘the twelve labours of Hercules’. The twelve labours of Hercules are linked to the zodiac; they represent the twelve activities that will enable...

Quote of the Day

If all you desire is to live an ordinary, mundane, insignificant life, you can let yourself go; it is pointless to be vigilant and to make efforts to gain control yourself and master your instincts. This self-control would even be detrimental to your physical and mental health. You would become insufferable for your family and everyone around you; your frustration would make you bitter, harsh and intolerant. For your vigilance and self-mastery to have an ultimate purpose, you must have a very high ideal. You must want to make something great of your life, something beautiful and noble, and you must feel the need to add another element to it, an element of spirituality, of light. Otherwise, your efforts will get you nowhere. Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov

Thought of the Day

What kind of people do you tend to notice and appreciate? It is those who are rich, learned and illustrious, those who are successful and who have achieved social prominence. And when you meet people with great moral qualities – patience, goodness, forbearance, purity and generosity – you fail to appreciate them, and for that matter, you do not even notice them. Well this is the wrong attitude! For it is thanks to these people who attract no attention that life on earth is still possible. While others make every effort to be noticed and to claim the limelight, they continue modestly to pursue their beneficial activities in the shadows. The light, peace and harmony emanating from them purifies the atmosphere and renders the air more breathable for everyone. I am not saying this to turn...

Thought of the Day

It is important to know that every gesture you make is magic. So when you meet people in the morning, you must never greet them with an empty vessel, because unwittingly and without intending any harm, you are wishing them a whole day of emptiness, poverty and failure. You will say that it does not matter, that out in the world people do not pay attention to such things. Well, if others lack awareness, that is no reason to imitate them. Let them do as they like, but here we are learning the laws of the new life and must train ourselves to be conscious of everything we do. So when you meet your friends in the morning, not only must you take care not to greet them with an empty vessel, you must put a great deal of love in your heart and wish them a good day. If you learn to work with the...

Thought of the Day

A man has a yard full of hens. He treats them kindly and generously, caring for them and tossing them grain every day. Yet, one by one, his hens disappear. Why? What is going on? Well, it is the man himself who comes to get them. He cuts off their heads, and his wife puts them in the pot. So, after having taken such good care of them, they eat them, exclaiming, ‘Mmm, this chicken is delicious, cooked just right!’ This is what most human beings call love. They experience love as an appetite that demands to be satisfied. This is a primitive tendency that comes to them from the animal kingdom and is something on which they must work. In the new life, we will learn that the first rule to observe when we love someone is to think of the other person and not of ourselves. Love is first...

Quote of the Day

If you want invisible beings to visit your soul and to help, protect and transform you, then strive to create a pure atmosphere free of all disharmony. It is only in the midst of love, beauty, purity and light that great changes can take place within you. When you are in a forest, near a spring or by a lake, be still for a while; let the silence, freshness and purity penetrate you. And as you listen to the water and the birds sing, when you hear the rustling of leaves and gaze at the stars in the night sky, abandon yourself to this peace, to this harmony. And just as you tune to nature, so too must you learn to tune to human beings. When you are in the presence of someone who emanates the fragrance of a flower garden or the music of a spring, try to tune to them, for this being can enlighten...

Word of the Day

A true Initiate seeking harmony and divine perfection knows that this perfection is reflected everywhere in nature, but that nowhere is it better represented than in the human body. Everywhere else, it is dispersed: the oceans, for example, represent one part of a human body, the rivers another, the mountains and sky yet others. Only human beings can express this beauty in its entirety, for it is in man and woman that God has summed up the whole of creation, all that exists throughout the cosmos. When this reflection is perfectly realized in a human body, Initiates contemplate it with delight, saying to themselves, ‘Here is a creature that reflects all of God’s virtues better than any other.’ But they do not dwell on this being; in contemplating it, they seek to rediscover the splendour...

Thought of the Day

Our thoughts can influence our behaviour, just as our behaviour can influence our thoughts. Whether our negative instincts have distorted our bearing, gestures or expressions, or whether our activities have led us to adopt ideas and feelings that have brought about changes in us, we have the power to address both our movements and our expressions. Suppose that you have been in an atmosphere unsuited to the spiritual life for a few weeks, and you have been unable to meditate, pray or quietly reflect. Left to yourself, you have given in to your most ordinary inclinations, and this is reflected in your behaviour. You must now turn the situation around, telling yourself, ‘Using my will to make certain gestures, to carry out certain actions, I will get love flowing within me again and find...

Quote of the Day

There are countless cases of suicide, but they can all be boiled down into three categories. They are caused either by a lack of intelligence, a lack of heart, or else a weak will. If you have a good understanding of things, if you know that there is a divine world populated by a multitude of glorious beings and that this divine world has left its imprint on the physical world; if you know that feelings and desires are so powerful that with patience and perseverance you can make them come true; and finally, if you manage to control yourself, no longer seeking solely to satisfy your appetites, but to consider all the difficulties of life as a means of strengthening your will, you will never voluntarily put an end to your life. Even misery and deprivation, even sickness and solitude will...

Thought of the Day

Jesus said, ‘Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it.’ This narrow gate that gives access to the kingdom of God is that of Initiation. Initiation is an asceticism that teaches people how to rid themselves of their weaknesses and all their base tendencies. It can be compared to the opening through which a snake passes when it must shed its skin. Disciples are those who are preparing to pass through the narrow gate that will remove their old skin, that is to say, their false conceptions and pernicious tendencies. Each of you must pass through this narrow gate, and instead of being anxious and fearful, rejoice that, thanks to this, you will become a new person with new thoughts, feelings and behaviour...
